Discipline Task Five | Fill Procrastination With Better Activities
The fifth task of discipline within the 14-day restart is to replace procrastination with more constructive and fulfilling activities. Procrastination can take many forms, such as avoiding responsibilities by endlessly checking my phone or staying up late to enjoy some alone time. Often, this behaviour arises because I feel a lack of personal control during the day, which leads me to seek escape in temporary distractions. This pattern of avoiding discipline and structure not only consumes time but also undermines my productivity and focus. Consequently, the lack of a structured routine impacts my ability to start the next day on the right foot, setting me up for a rushed and stressful morning. To address this, I need to develop better time management strategies, set clear daily goals, and prioritise meaningful activities that boost my sense of control and fulfilment. By doing so, I can break free from unproductive habits, build discipline, and create a more balanced and intentional daily routine.
This challenge task aims to cultivate better habits around the home. The Irish have historically taken pride in maintaining their living spaces, caring for their property with attention and dedication. They believe in keeping everything clean, organised, and inviting, which involves actively tackling unwanted chores rather than choosing laziness and letting mess accumulate. This practice reflects the steady discipline often associated with Irish culture, rooted in sport, art, and music, and fosters an environment that feels comfortable and pleasant every day. By embracing these habits, I not only improve my home but also develop a sense of pride and well-being that enhances daily life.
Discipline opens me up to my true potential
I believe that life is about learning, and the challenge will push me to take up more of my interests instead of time-wasting habits. I have interests in history and art that I will invest more time in throughout the challenge by having no phone until 8 pm, unless for learning. The Catholic faith teaches us that true growth comes through discipline. We are called to make the most of the time God has given to us. To answer that call, I must sacrifice comfort in order to become a new version of myself. By turning away from distractions, we open ourselves to the full potential God has placed within us.
Sirach 6:33: "If you are willing to listen, you will learn; if you apply yourself, you will become wise."
