Discipline Task Three | Hold yourself accountable

Holding yourself accountable is task three of the 14-day restart challenge. This task is a massive part of any challenge because, without accountability measures in place, there is a massive chance of failure. Accountability means following through with clear expectations I have set myself. All while giving myself clear ownership over my efforts at change. People who do not respect themselves by standing true to their standards and obligations cannot be respected by others. This means following through with what I am setting out to do.

The Irish understood that if they didn’t follow through on their part of a mission. Someone else would be put under pressure as a result of their failure to show up. A lot of the time, goals can end up being an all-out failure due to a lack of teamwork. This still rings true to this day. So, it’s best to follow through with the tasks I’m setting myself.

Accountability helps me to physically see progress through tracking my daily effort. Daily review of this effort allows me to identify areas where I’m falling short. If needed, I can make changes for any mistakes I make or if I fail to perform a task. My way of tracking this is a simple format of ticking off each task at the end of each day and writing out a review of how each day went. At the end of each week, I will review how everything went. Then again at the end, to define how the whole pursuit went; by doing so, I will know what to address for the next challenge I set myself.

The Catholic Church teaches us that holding ourselves accountable for our mistakes is one of the foundations of our faith. Mostly achieved by going through confession. It’s about trying to be better than who we were before. Learning from challenges and correcting behaviour in pursuit of my goals is one way for me to do this.

Romans 14:12: "So then each of us will give an account of himself to God."
